Redo (Re-operative) Cardiac Surgery

Redo cardiac surgery refers to a repeat heart operation performed on patients who previously underwent cardiac surgery. It is needed when heart conditions progress over time, previously repaired structures weaken, or implanted valves or grafts become dysfunctional. Because of scar tissue and structural changes from the first surgery, redo cardiac procedures are more complex and require specialised expertise. These surgeries aim to restore heart function, relieve symptoms, and improve long-term quality of life.

What Are Redo Cardiac Surgeries?

Redo or re-operative heart surgery is becoming increasingly common as more patients live longer after their initial heart procedures. Over time, certain heart conditions may progress or new problems may develop, making a second or even third operation necessary. Redo cardiac surgery is performed to improve heart function, relieve symptoms, and enhance overall quality of life when the existing repair or replacement is no longer sufficient.

Many underlying heart diseases—such as aneurysms, atherosclerosis, valvular degeneration, or prosthetic valve dysfunction—are progressive in nature. In some cases, a previously implanted valve may wear out or develop complications like infection (endocarditis) or thrombosis. In other situations, patients may require a repeat operation to correct issues related to an earlier reconstruction or to address cardiac changes that occur with aging.

Re-operative cardiac surgery is more complex than first-time operations because the chest and heart structures often develop scar tissue, adhesions, or calcification after the initial surgery. This makes re-entry into the chest (resternotomy) technically demanding and requires meticulous planning, advanced surgical skill, and a highly experienced heart team. Despite the increased complexity, modern surgical techniques, improved imaging, better cardiopulmonary support, and enhanced ICU care have significantly improved the safety and outcomes of redo cardiac procedures.

Our Expertise in Redo Cardiac Surgery

We offer comprehensive surgical solutions for patients requiring re-operative heart procedures, including:

Redo valve repair or replacement (Aortic and Mitral)

Redo Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

Aneurysm Repair of the aorta or major blood vessels

Surgery for prosthetic valve complications, including endocarditis or thrombosis

Our team uses advanced imaging, meticulous pre-operative planning, and evidence-based surgical strategies to deliver safe, effective outcomes for even the most complex redo cardiac cases.
