Thoracic surgeries
Thoracic surgeries focus on treating conditions of the chest, including the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, and chest wall. Using advanced techniques and minimally invasive approaches, we aim to provide safe, effective treatment that enhances breathing, reduces discomfort, and improves overall quality of life.

What is Cardiothoracic Surgery?
Cardiothoracic surgery is a specialised field of medicine focused on diagnosing and surgically treating conditions of the heart, lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, and chest wall. These organs lie within the thoracic cavity: the space between the neck and the diaphragm, which contains vital structures such as the heart, lungs, trachea, esophagus, pleura, and major blood vessels.
Cardiothoracic surgeons perform a wide range of life-saving and life-improving procedures, including coronary artery bypass surgery, lung and heart surgeries, lung cancer operations, treatment of infections such as TB, and complex trauma or chest injury repairs.
These surgeries are often intricate and require high expertise, advanced technology, and dedicated post-operative intensive care to ensure patient safety and the best possible outcomes.
Common conditions treated include lung trauma, empyema, bullous lung disease, pneumothorax, bronchiectasis, hydatid cysts, and mediastinal masses, among many others.
Our Expertise in Thoracic Surgery
We offer a comprehensive range of thoracic surgical services using advanced technology and minimally invasive techniques whenever possible. Our goal is to ensure safer procedures, less pain, and quicker recovery for every patient.
Key Thoracic Procedures We Perform
• Decortication
A complex procedure to remove thickened fibrous tissue around the lung or chest wall, commonly required in chronic infections like empyema. This helps the lung expand better and improves breathing.
• Lobectomy
Surgical removal of one lobe of the lung (right lung has 3 lobes; left has 2).
This is most commonly done for early-stage lung cancer or damaged lung tissue confined to one section.
• Pneumonectomy
Removal of an entire lung when disease or cancer affects the whole lung and cannot be treated by removing only a part.
• Cervical Rib Excision
Performed to treat Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, a condition where an extra rib or abnormal structure compresses nerves or blood vessels, causing pain and circulation issues.
• Mediastinal Mass Excision
Removal of abnormal growths in the mediastinum (the central part of the chest).
These can include thymomas, cysts, lymph node masses, or other tumours.
• Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery (VATS/Keyhole Surgery)
Many thoracic procedures can now be done through small keyhole incisions using high-definition cameras and specialised instruments.
Benefits of VATS:
-
Smaller incisions
-
Less pain
-
Reduced hospital stay
-
Faster recovery
-
Earlier return to normal activities
Minimally invasive techniques are especially valuable in treating lung cancer, infections, and other chest conditions.
